A downloadable game for Windows and Linux

About Seven Sages

Seven Sages is a retro-style puzzler where the player must decipher coded messages and solve riddles in order to reveal the narrative of the game. You play a historian who has just inherited a strange collection of sealed books from his dead grandfather. With only a small library of books, a desk to write notes, and your own brain, you must find a way to unlock your grandfather's sealed books and uncover their secrets.

The game also features short stories from various independent writers. Be sure to check them out!

Hi, i don't know if its my issue, but the game crashes after the introduction

I think Book IV might have a typo; is the second line of numbers supposed to start with 12-4 (as it currently does) or should it be 12-2 instead?

Hi, sorry for the cartoonishly late reply. I believe you are correct. Thanks for notifying me!

The game seems to require Java Runtime Environment. There is no Java RE installed on my system, but I do have portable Java RE (jPortable) which can easily run JAR files, but not Java executables.

As such, does the Windows package consist of a Java EXE or a JAR file ? If the former, can a JAR version be included for download ? Thanks !

It's a jar file :D

Hi! GREAT GAME! LOVE IT! English is not my first language, and i get stuck on every password but i love it anyway, though i'm stuck on the second password i expect great things from this game :D, felt so good about myself when i found the first one :D

Ahaha, glad you like it! The second password might be the trickiest one based on the feedback I've been getting, but several people have solved it :) good luck

Please... A hint... Its been four years

Haha, okay. The password is a plural word. Hopefully that helps.

Hey what happened to the Linux version? I could have sworn there was one before my laptop broke? Now that I fixed it its gone :/ ill try it with Wine

EDIT: I didn't download before posting. Being its made with Java, the windows version simply runs in Linux. Just allow executing it as a program under permissions :)

Done :)

Stuck at book three for now. Will find sooner or later. Awesome game !

Edit : found it, felt a bit silly.

Haha nice

Is there someway that you could provide hints for the game? I am still stuck on the first book even though I think I have the right clue. Already spent a couple of hours but can't get any further. Thanks for a great game!

About a month ago I posted hints for each puzzle on my website, but then decided to take them down shortly after because I felt it spoiled the magic of the game. The only hint I can give you is that all the hints you need are already built into each puzzle. It just takes some analysis and connecting the dots. Anyway, thanks for playing and good luck!

Four long years after and I still havent cracked the first puzzle. I think I four years ago cracked a few of the other puzzles, but never the first. Today i downloaded the game once again to try it out and I realize that I am still clueless. It might be because english is not my first language but I have tried quite a few words on the puzzle, and now I think I deserve a hint.

New version of the game added with hints lol

Wonderful! Maybe my life finally can be complete now. 😁

Hello!! I just want to say that this game is AWESOME. I have not finished it yet though, and I have some kind of a problem with saving my progress. I'm running the game from the Itch app for Mac OS X El Capitán 10.11.12 on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15'' Late 2013). Also, the Fullscreen feature seems to be way bigger than my screen.
I'm new to Itch, maybe there's something I'm doing wrong? I haven't tried running it in Windows OS. Anyway, Thanks for a GREAT GAME! I really mean it!

Thanks! Glad you like it! Yea, I tested it just now on the Itch app and got the same problem. I guess the way the file access works is different when launching via Itch. If you launch the game manually it should work properly. Sorry about that!

I did that and now I'm finally able to save properly and had no problems with the fullscreen feature. I'd like to open the game from Itch though.. I tried replacing the files in the original location and it didn't work, so I made an alias from the game to the desktop. Will write again soon! Thanks.

Cool, I'll let you know if I figure out how to get it working through Itch.

Until then, just opening the installation folder through the Itch app and then launching the game from there is the best work around.

Just a heads up. I got the saves working on Windows when running through the Itch app. Unfortunately my macbook died recently so I can't work on the Mac version of it. I do have a build that should make the saves work on Mac theoretically, but it'll be a while before I can actually test it.

Maybe I can test the build on my Mac if you want? I'd be glad to help! Oh and... really, this is a great game, the short stories are also perfect. I read them all in one session haha! Congratulations again, and I'm here to help.

Oh wait, is the update the new build that has working saves on itch?
Edit:
Oh hey again, I updated the game and now I can't launch it. Nor from Itch nor from the folder, seems like a problem with the .jar. Let me know if I can be of more help. Tried unistalliing/erasing the game and re installing it too.

Thanks! Try running the game via the terminal by entering: java -jar and then the path of the jar file, and see what error message is outputted. Also I re-uploaded the old build (v1.1).

Here you go:

java -jar /Users/Benz/Library/Application\ Support/itch/apps/Seven\ Sages/Seven\ Sages/Seven\ Sages\ v1.2.jar

I don't really understand most of it, but maybe it is something i'm doing wrong.. no?
Sorry if it is! Let me know if I can help you further.

Thanks! This helps a lot! Don't worry, it's a problem on my end. I'll see what I can do about fixing it. I guess for now Mac users have to use v1.1

Took a while, but I think I finally got it working
